ABSTRACT

Transmethylation from S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) to alcohols, amines and thiols is a well-known route of drug metabolism (See Chapters7 and 8). In the case of thiols, methyl transfer clearly represents a detoxication step (Weisiger and Jakoby, 1980). Besides the multitude of xenobiotic thiols to which humans may be exposed, this enzyme plays a role in the detoxication of endogenous compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide, produced by enteric microorganisms (Weisiger et al., 1980).
