As illustrated in Figure 4, nutrition, exercise and health lifestyle/habits are the foundation of the primary prevention of conditions such as cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.

Similar principles hold true for later stages of the same diseases, but the prescription may need to be adjusted, according to individual needs and health status. This section deals with general principles applicable to all adult women. Modifications of the prescription to meet these specific needs of a given condition are discussed separately under the heading of the relevant disease (see Chapter 3).
