ABSTRACT

It has been stated that ‘Among all neurologic disorders, the cost to society of automotive spinal cord injury is exceeded only by the cost of mental retardation’.

Spinal shock is defined as the complete loss of all neurologic function, including reflexes and rectal tone below a specific level associated with autonomic dysfunction. Neurogenic shock refers to the haemodynamic triad of hypotension, bradycardia and peripheral vasodilatation resulting from autonomic dysfunction and the interruption of sympathetic nervous system control in acute spinal cord injury (SCI).
