ABSTRACT

Animals are pivotal in biomedical research. As the demand for animals in scientific research increases and the results permeate into everyday life, it is important to understand the guidelines before proceeding to experiments with animals. The concept of preventing cruelty to animals in the laboratory was introduced in the 19th century. Following decades of modification, the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 was passed to define the duties and responsibilities of all those involved in animal research.
