ABSTRACT

Dyspepsia has been defined as abdominal pain or discomfort centered in the upper abdomen or epigastrium. The term is not a diagnosis in its own right. It has been used to refer to various symptoms including upper abdominal fullness, retrosternal pain, early satiety, bloating, anorexia, nausea or vomiting. Patients with typical or predominant positional dependent heartburn have symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) until proven otherwise and should not be labeled as dyspeptic.
