ABSTRACT

Ecstasy, or MDMA (3-4 Methylenedioxymethamphetamine) is an amphetamine derivative. In general, most cases of MDMA toxicity result only in mild symptoms. However, severe toxicity may develop after typical recreational doses. Death from MDMA was first reported in 1987 in the USA and in 1991 in Britain. It was first synthesized in 1914 for use as an appetite suppressant and in the 1950s as a psychotherapeutic drug because of its mood-modifying ability. Its clinical use was banned in the USA in 1985 because of its neurotoxicity and its potential for misuse. In the UK, MDMA has been listed since 1977 as a Class A drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1971.
