ABSTRACT
Acute adrenal crisis may occur in either primary or secondary adrenal insufficiency. The acute event is often precipitated by acute stress, e.g. infection, trauma in a patient with pre-existing chronic adrenal insufficiency or abrupt cessation of glucocorticoid therapy in patients with adrenal atrophy, secondary to chronic steroid administration.
