ABSTRACT

A febrile convulsion is a seizure associated with a fever in the absence of evidence of intracranial infection and with no other obvious cause. They are common, affecting approximately 3-5% of all children. The majority occur between the ages of 3 months and 6 years, with a peak incidence at 18 months. The history is characteristically of a child with a febrile illness, usually a viral respiratory tract infection, who has a major seizure. The seizure is generally tonic/clonic, not focal in nature and short-lasting (less than 10 minutes) and recovery is rapid and complete.
