ABSTRACT

Health status measurement, or health-related quality of life (HRQL) measurement, documents the influence of health on a patient’s ability to enjoy a fulfilling life. HRQL measurement is becoming a more common component of medical research, since it is implicit (but often empirical) in any clinical decision. Health status measurement provides an evidence base for incorporating patients’ experiences and expectations in clinical decisions. It is fundamental to understanding the impact of interventions in terms of wellbeing and cost.
