ABSTRACT

Infection of the urinary tract is the most common bacterial infection of humans of all ages and a huge problem throughout the world. Not only in terms of its morbidity and occasional mortality, but also in terms of the cost of resources required to treat it. It affects women much more than men and it has been estimated that 50% of women will suffer one or more symptomatic urinary tract infections in her lifetime. The features of urinary tract infection (UTI) are listed in Table 7.1. Figure 7.1 demonstrates the spectrum of urinary tract infections.
