ABSTRACT

There are two types of radiation casualties, irradiated and contaminated. Normally radiation casualties will be taken to designated National Arrangements for Incidents (involving) Radio-activity (NAIR) hospitals, although they may present to the nearest Accident and Emergency Unit. Some patients may be suffering from serious life threatening injuries. Patients who are contaminated may have external and internal contamination. As long as reasonable precautions are taken the patients should present no significant risk to staff. Contact the nominated NAIR staff who will measure the level of contamination and provide appropriate advice. Irradiated patients present no risk to staff.
