ABSTRACT

The 1998 European Resuscitation Council Guidelines for resuscitation of babies at birth have been based on the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). They estimate that worldwide there is the potential to save 800000 babies per year from morbidity or mortality from newborn asphyxia by using simple airway interventions. A relatively small number of newborn babies need resuscitation beyond gentle stimulation to breathe. Of the few that do need supplemental help the majority only require assisted ventilation for a short period of time, the remaining minority will need advanced interventions including circulatory support and drug administration.
