The spectrum of injury ranges from a transient unpleasant sensation to instant cardiac arrest. The mechanism of tissue damage is complex, and not completely defined but includes the direct effects of current on cell membranes of nerves, blood vessels and muscles, and the conversion of electric energy into heat energy as current passes through the body.
