ABSTRACT

Pneumothorax describes air within the pleural cavity. Pneumothorax may be spontaneous or secondary to underlying disease such as asthma or emphysema, traumatic or iatrogenic. Spontaneous pneumothorax usually arises from a rupture of a small subpleural bleb. After the first spontaneous pneumothorax there is a 10% chance of reoccurrence and after a second pneumothorax this increases to 40%.
