ABSTRACT

In Chapter 6 we examined what the toxicological assessment is. In essence, it is a hazard assessment, seeking to identify the potential of a chemical to cause various forms of ill-health, and seeking to characterise it, in large part by defining the dose-response relationship. In practice, this is a complex exercise, as effects may be stochastic (all or none) or severity of effect may increase with dose. This is discussed further below.
