ABSTRACT
For the purposes of this book, risk management essentially covers three things: process safety, product safety and environmental protection. It takes place within legal and organisational frameworks as well as within a philosophical framework. In this chapter, I will examine the philosophical framework through investigating several major aspects of risk. The first aspect is what constitutes the risk. The second aspect is the processes for assessing and managing risks, and the third is the criteria for reaching decisions about risk.
