ABSTRACT

The mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems of a modern tunnel are vitally important, irrespective of whether the tunnel is carrying road or rail traffic. After all the civil engineering has been finished and effectively “hidden,” it is taken for granted; it is these M&E systems that interact with the tunnel users and operators. They allow the safe operation and maintenance of the tunnel and are an indispensable part of any modern transportation tunnel. Since many of the key aspects of tunnel electrical and mechanical design are common to all forms of tunnels, in this chapter, we will only give a general overview of such systems, and point out the particular issues that are relevant to immersed tunnels.
