ABSTRACT

The control of water or moisture content in conventional biofilters is a crucial factor for biofilter effectiveness because microorganisms require water to carry out their metabolic activities (Datta and Allen, 20051). An inefficient water control or supply has been reported as responsible for 75% of biofilter failures` (Auria et al., 20002). The drying-out effect can be partially solved by humidifying the gas stream before it enters the bioreactor. Nevertheless, additional moisture adjustments may also be required because bio-oxidation is an exothermic reaction.
