ABSTRACT

In this report, conventional sampling and detection method, as well as PCR method were applied to estimate airborne microorganisms present in a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) environments in Beijing. Results showed that the concentration varied over a wide range for cultivable airborne bacteria and fungi. High concentrations of airborne bacteria and fungi were obtained in sludge dewatering house and fine grit chamber, respectively. The highest concentration of cultivable airborne bacteria was detected in the pore sizes of 2.1-3.3 μm. More than 67% airborne fungal were located in the 1.1-3.3 μm size range. The PCR method, based on DNA amplification techniques, can be applied to enhance the monitoring or verification the presence of airborne bacteria.
