ABSTRACT

Ammonia is an important environmental pollutant emitted to the atmosphere by a great variety of agricultural and industrial processes.1 Besides short range odor nuisance, ammonia emissions have been related to the eutrophication and acidification of natural ecosystems. The treatment of gas streams containing low ammonia concentration can be achieved through gas biofiltration, which represent an attractive technology due to the relatively low cost of installation and operation. However, the performance and stability of these systems is seriously compromised by the deterioration of the organic packing materials commonly used so far.
