ABSTRACT

Technology projects were a specialized breed of projects that largely were handled as separate procurements. But as the complexity of the needs of these projects and their integration with the traditional project components grew, more and more we are seeing a blend of both types that requires industry attention. Nowadays designers and constructors regularly encounter technology components in their projects. These projects or their components present a special handling problem that has slowly made its impact on our traditional project management process. The project team in the traditional projects looks at scope, budget, and schedule as the primary factors of how success is defined. In the technology area, the team looks at meeting system requirements and how the system features ultimately function to define success to the end users. With that it is clear why the delivery processes differ, and how the owner, design and consultant team, and the vendor view the factors determining the project focus. Numerous papers have been written on project management in the technology areas, the content here specifically makes the comparison with traditional projects and how to improve chances for success out the two types of projects.
