ABSTRACT
During the service life of concrete, a wide range of circumstances can bring it into contact with chemical species that can cause deterioration of either the cement matrix or aggregate. Furthermore, some constituents can present chemical threats from within the concrete itself. This chapter examines three of the main mechanisms of chemical degradation: sulphate attack, alkali-aggregate reaction and acid attack.
