ABSTRACT

To control the performance of the cathodic protection system a number of reference electrodes are normally installed. In the water, zinc reference electrodes are often used. A 25 m × 12 m swimming pool would normally require 4 – 10 zinc reference electrodes. In the concrete, silver/silver chloride reference electrodes are generally used for absolute potentials and depolarisation and the cheaper mixed metal oxide reference electrodes are used for depolarisation measurements only. Often, cast in reference electrodes will be calibrated against an external reference electrode.
