ABSTRACT

For many types of infrastructure, such as buildings and tunnels, ensuring re safety is one of the most fundamental requirements of design, construction and operation. The principal aim of re safety precautions is to minimise the loss of life, but in many cases, re safety provision will also have to take into consideration other requirements, such as minimising nancial loss incurred as a result of damage to property and contents, business continuity and the environment. It is essential that, at the beginning of the design stage, the requirements for re safety are clearly de ned, taking into consideration the risk posed by re and the level of acceptable risk.
