ABSTRACT

The piezometer cone penetration test (CPTU) involves the penetration of a 60◦ apex cone of typically 35.7mm diameter (10 cm2 area) as shown in Fig. 1. Pushing at a constant 2 cm/s (∼1m/min) is achieved by hydraulic force supplied typically by either a drill-rig or a specially outfitted cone-pushing vehicle.AtUBC, all cone equipment was designed by the author and built in the Civil Engineering machine and electronics shops including the enclosed in-situ testing research truck which supplies the cone-pushing force (Campanella and Robertson, 1981). Davies and Campanella (1995) list typical pushing capabilities through clay and sand soils.
