ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Using Malaysia as a paradigm, this paper discusses various initiatives in promoting research among academic staff and also how universities have benefited from responding to various government measures designed to stimulate research. The Malaysian public universities have instituted various initiatives to develop research among their own academic staff. Such measures include encouraging individual or group initiatives in conducting pure or applied research and the Malaysian government has played a big role in encouraging universities to develop research programmes. The author discusses some of the problems encountered by the universities in conducting research in Malaysia that bear relevance to how private universities in the Gulf might foster indigenous research.
