ABSTRACT
Now, a good reason for this hierarchy emerging and lasting might be that actually universities are, primarily, institutions that engage in research with teaching being an important but complimentary part of their core business, but not their primary raison d’etre. This is a philosophical, political and economic debate that we might conduct elsewhere; the fact remains that universities are primarily differentiated by their research cultures and it is this aspect of their being that I seek to address here.
