ABSTRACT

Well-groomed nails are an important fashion accessory for the modern woman. Americans spent over 6 billion dollars on nail salon services in 2000. While nail cosmetics are used safely by millions of women, there are some problems associated with their use. The problems associated with nail cosmetics fall into one of four categories: allergic, irritant, mechanical and infectious. Recognition of nail cosmetic problems and substitution of alternative products and techniques can help women continue to use nail cosmetics safely (Table 11).
