ABSTRACT

In order to accurately diagnose a nail condition, evaluation of the nail should be undertaken systematically (Table 1). A thorough history should include information about medical conditions such as anemia and endocrine disorders, dermatological history of disorders such as psoriasis, lichen planus, or alopecia areata. A history of fungal infections in other cutaneous locations, medications, occupation and hobbies may be helpful. Family history and a history of cosmetic usage should be ascertained. Was the nail condition present at birth and how has it progressed since the onset? Has it remained localized to one nail or spread to many nails? Is the problem relapsing and remitting? Is there any pain or discomfort? What treatments have been tried?
