ABSTRACT
We have tried to separate data management and information management. That is, data management focuses on database systems technologies such as query management, transaction management, and storage management. Information management is much broader than data management, and we have included many topics in this category. Note that information retrieval is also a particular aspect of information management. We have devoted a separate chapter to information retrieval systems such as text retrieval, image retrieval, and video retrieval as they have a special relationship to search engines and Web mining, to be elaborated in Part II.
