ABSTRACT

I first visited Everglades National Park in September 1966 during the height of the annual rainy season. Out of curiosity, I stopped at one point to observe water flowing through a culvert under the road to Pa-hay-okee Overlook. The area was teeming with fishes, all easily visible in the clear, shallow water. I was fascinated watching gar, bass, several kinds of sunfish, and innumerable smaller species, all jockeying about in the sunlight. The sight was a delight to a budding ichthyologist from Ohio who was beginning graduate school in Florida.
