ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses of specific technology solutions to help build out and implement security infrastructure. The network architectures have changed over the past few years as the use of the Internet and distributed computing has increased. To help secure sensitive or confidential corporate communications, companies started using virtual private networks to encrypt the data traveling over the Internet. Typical configurations range from basic, single–site corporate networks to complex, multisite, interorganizational networks. A virtual local area network (LAN) is a network of computers behaving as if they are physically connected to the same wire even if they are physically located on different network segments. The physical security is a critical component of a security infrastructure, yet most companies overlook it until one of their valuable computer systems walks off seemingly of its own accord. The physical security can be costly, and companies need to design site and physical LAN security to secure corporate assets in a cost-effective manner.
