ABSTRACT

This specimen is a stillborn female fetus (Yakovlev case number RPSL W-94-62; referred to as Y94-62) with a crown rump length (CR) of 210 mm estimated to be at gestational week (GW) 24. The brain was cut in the coronal (frontal) plane in 1452 35-μm thick sections and is classified as a Normative Control in the Yakovlev Collection (Haleem, 1990). Since there is no photograph of this brain before it was embedded and cut, we turned to the comprehensive atlas that Retzius published in 1896 showing whole fetal brains in medial, lateral, superior, and inferior views and midline sagittally-cut brains. Figure 1 , taken from Retzius (1896), shows the exterior of a brain from a specimen at the same age as Y94-62, along with the approximate cutting angle of the sections.
