ABSTRACT

This specimen is a stillborn female fetus (Yakovlev case number RPSL B-24-60; designated here as Y24-60) with a crown rump length (CR) of 205 mm estimated to be at gestational week (GW) 23. The brain was cut in the sagittal plane in 842 35-μm thick sections and is classified as a Normative Control in the Yakovlev Collection (Haleem, 1990). Since there is no photograph of this brain before it was embedded and cut, we turned to the comprehensive atlas that Retzius published in 1896 showing whole fetal brains in medial, lateral, superior, and inferior views and midline sagittally cut brains. Figure 2 (Retzius, 1896), shows the midline sagittal surface of a brain from a specimen at approximately the same age as Y24-60.
