ABSTRACT

This specimen is a stillborn female (Yakovlev case number RPSL-B-391-62, referred to here as Y391-62) with a crown rump length (CR) of 170 mm and estimated to be at gestational week (GW) 17. The brain was cut in the horizontal plane in 690 35-μm thick sections and is classified as a Normative Control in the Yakovlev Collection (Haleem, 1990). Since there is no photograph of this brain before it was embedded and cut, we turned to the comprehensive atlas that Retzius published in 1896 showing whole fetal brains in medial, lateral, superior, and inferior views and midline sagittally cut brains. Figure 8 , taken from Retzius (1896), shows the exterior of a brain from a specimen that is of comparable age as Y391-62, along with the approximate cutting angle of the sections.
