ABSTRACT
Significant quantities of wastes are produced annually around the world from the oil industry. The most common hazardous petroleum wastes are oily materials (e.g. oily drilling fluids, crude oil and refinery oil) which are generated from complex processes consisting of several stages of operations such as exploration, production (upstream operations), refining and distribution (downstream) as shown in the simplified schematic in Figure 1.
