ABSTRACT

My experience as an industrial designer has been acquired in fashion and textiles; the ubiquitous nature of this expressive field has brought opportunities to teach on design, craft and art based courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I am interested in interdisciplinary approaches that use forms of visual communication within the investigative process and in the explanation of outcomes. I made a decision at the outset of this recent project to utilise a method of study and mode of presentation suited to the needs of its content. My research is derived from the individual contributions of many people via the accumulation of hundreds of full colour photographs. These cannot be meaningfully reproduced in this publication; diagrams or figures will not communicate my results. Therefore, I aim to supply here an introduction to the project and an overview of findings. My intention is to report in greater detail on specialised outcomes following the completion of current work in progress. I hope you will be open to this explanation of context and realise that my work takes a considered position in relation to the expression of design and emotion, which makes it necessary for me to use the T word and speak personally.
