ABSTRACT

Introduction Diabetes mellitus occurs in four per thousand women aged 20-40 years, and 80-90 per cent are treated with insulin.1 However, at > 30 years of age and especially in non-Caucasian women the prevalence of type II diabetes rises greatly.2 Therefore, although the average obstetric unit delivering 3000 babies each year might expect around 10 women with diabetes to deliver, in some areas where there is a high proportion of IndoAsian women, there may be considerably more.
