ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This paper reports preliminary results of a study of the pollution of indoor air by Particulate Matter (PM) measured inside flats located in various places in Warsaw and in unpolluted suburbs. Air pollution was evaluated by measuring the magnetic susceptibility χ of dust taken from vacuum cleaners from polluted sites. Hysteresis parameters (Hcr – coercivity of remanence, Hc – coercivity, Ms – saturation magnetization and Mrs – saturation remanence), frequency dependent susceptibility χfd and thermal decay of saturation remanence (SIRM(T) curve) allow the identification of magnetic minerals and their granulometry. χ shows that the most polluted places are the city centre and the Ursynów district. Hysteresis parameters, χfd values and SIRM(T) curves for dust and for soil samples taken in the vicinity demonstrate that the indoor pollution contains finer particulates than outdoor pollution.
