ABSTRACT

Sediments are a major repository for contaminants that enter the marine environment (Batley and Maher 2001). In urban areas heavy metal levels are often markedly increased as a result of direct industry inputs, stormwater, and as a result of leaching and deposition of antifoulant material associated with shipping (Ranke 2002). The ecological effects of heavy metals are of concern to environmental managers, industry and government stakeholders, and the wider community.
