ABSTRACT

The use of alternative medicine in the United States has increased dramatically in the past two decades. Recent estimates reveal that up to 73% of the population may be using some sort of alternative therapy (Ramos-Remus et al., 1999). In particular, the use of nutritional supplements is becoming more prevalent, especially among athletes. Popular sports figures have been touting the benefits of supplements such as androstenedione (Begley and Brant, 1999). From 1990 to 1997 the use of these products increased by over 400%. It is now estimated that Americans spend over $1.5 billion a year on these supplements (Ernst and Chrubasik, 2000).
