ABSTRACT
Following thorough instrumentation of an infected root canal there will be a significantly reduced number of bacteria present; but it is well documented that instrumentation alone cannot clean all the internal surfaces of the root canal. Bacteria can be found on the root canal walls, within dentine tubules and in lateral canals. Antibacterial irrigants and interappointment medicaments are needed to kill the remaining micro-organisms.
