ABSTRACT

Treatment involves removing the source of dentinal irritation. Sensitive dentine may be treated with fluoride resin or desensitizing toothpaste. Dental caries and leaking restorations should be removed and replaced with a sedative dressing. Recently placed restorations may need time to settle down; it is wise to check that there are no premature occlusal contacts. Teeth with cracks should be investigated. In small cavities a light-cured composite restoration may be useful, to prevent flexure of the fracture line. In some cases it may be necessary to prepare the tooth for a cast cusp-coverage restoration and to place a temporary crown.
