ABSTRACT

Developments in technology have seen an expansion in the use of interactive systems. One particular example has been the evolution of interactive tabletops (Muller-Tomfelde and Fjeld, 2012). They take the established metaphor of a traditional tabletop that users are familiar with and provide a convenient physical interface for people to meet, share information, look over maps and carry out tasks that require face-to-face collaboration (Shen, 2006). This paper explores the use of direct manipulation and passive maps displayed using a tabletop system. The motivation for this research arose from issues identified by EADS Innovation Works concerning how individuals in a group scenario appear to understand varying levels of detail from traditional paper-based maps.
