ABSTRACT

Data from the various instruments available to the industry still come in two formats: direct analogue signals (e.g. millivolt, volt, frequency outputs) or as a digitised string. The flexibility of handling digital strings means that the vast majority of analogue data are now being digitised, either within the instrument or at the collection point. A data component (i.e. a reading) will usually be preceded by a code block which contains some or all of the following:

a) Project and site identifier; b) date and time of reading; c) ambient temperature; and d) ambient pressure.
