ABSTRACT

This paper focuses on two established (and very different) methods for analysis of piles in liquefying soils: a simplified pseudo-static analysis, and an advanced seismic effective stress analysis. The paper highlights the need for a systematic approach in the use of the pseudo-static analysis allowing for identification of key parameters and uncertainties in the analysis. Numerical simulations of shake table tests are used to illustrate some important aspects in the modelling and application of the seismic effective stress analysis.
