Large-scale salt cavern collapse: Multi-parameter monitoring from precursor signs to general failure

The experiment site is located in the Nancy salt basin (dept. 54, France) in a concession owned by Solvay SA. It is mined using the using the channel and drilling method which consists in extracting the whole of the salt bed by dissolution from its base, by the injection of fresh water into boreholes and then extracting the resulting brine. Extraction then leads to the formation of a cavern in line with the water injection drilling holes. The collapse of the cavern is part of the mining scheme.
