ABSTRACT

All water used for supply originates from the atmosphere as precipitation (rain, snow and hail). This collects either above ground in rivers, natural lakes, man-made impounding reservoirs or below ground in aquifers (Chapter 2). Water rapidly absorbs both natural and man-made substances generally making the water unsuitable for drinking prior to some form of treatment.
