ABSTRACT

In pigeons, a low-protein diet (10%) reduced body weight and increased plasma cholesterol concentrations and the mortality rate (Little and Angell 1977). Dietary restrictions (40% of usual intake) in White Carneau pigeons from the age of 3 to 9 months reduced body weight by about −30%, plasma cholesterol levels by −20%, and the content of both free and esterified cholesterol in the aorta. This diet prevented the development of fatty streaks (Subbiah and Siekert 1977).
