ABSTRACT

The Modified Ingram program consists of ultraviolet A (UVA) or B (UVB) phototherapy and the topical application of Anthralin. Anthralin is a synthetic substance made from anthracene, a coal tar derivative, and has been used in the treatment of psoriasis since the 19th century. Anthralin may temporarily stain skin during treatment. It can permanently stain clothes. Treatments are given daily (Monday-Friday) and last approximately 2-4 hours. Following this daily regimen is most important for the treatments to be successful. It takes an average of 20-25 treatments to clear the skin. We begin treatments between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. We recommend that valuables, especially jewelry, be left at home as we can assume no responsibility for lost items. First you will receive your UVB or UVA light treatment. Afterwards we will apply an Anthralin paste to your psoriasis. Petroleum jelly will be applied to the surrounding normal skin to prevent irritation from the Anthralin. Talc powder is then applied to prevent the anthralin from smearing. You are then wrapped in a plastic dressing. A scrub suit will be provided for you to wear while wrapped in the Anthralin. You must stay within the hospital while the Anthralin is on your body. You will need an old pair of slippers or thongs to wear while in the Center. After leaving the Anthralin on at least 2 hours, you will be ready to shower. Make sure the Anthralin is completely washed off. We provide soap and shampoo. Please bring your own moisturizer. It is important to keep your skin well-lubricated. This treatment is intensive, but hopefully you will find that our qualified staff and treatment facilities help the time in treatment pass more quickly. The Phototherapy Treatment Center (PTC) is equipped with a refrigerator, microwave, telephone, TV, and VCR. Various movies for entertainment and education are available for your viewing while in treatment. We welcome you to the PTC. You are encouraged to communicate any concerns, questions, or recommendations to our staff. We hope you will have a pleasant and successful experience at our Center.
